WORLD WETLANDS DAY 2026

February 2 marks the 30th World Wetlands Day. The 2026 theme, “Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage,” highlights the deep connections between wetlands and the cultural practices, livelihoods and knowledge systems of communities around the world. Wetlands are areas of land that are permanently or seasonally saturated with water and play a vital role in water storage, flood control, and biodiversity conservation. Luacan Water Park, located in Barangay Paraiso, Milagros, Masbate, is recognized as an inland wetland ecosystem that supports both environmental balance and community needs. During the biodiversity assessment, a total of seventeen (17) fauna species were recorded, including eleven (11) avifauna, one (1) reptile, one (1) amphibian, two (2) aquatic fishes, and two (2) insect species, with conservation status based on DAO 2019-09 and the IUCN List of Threatened Species. Additionally, fourteen (14) flora species belonging to ten (10) families were identified. Of these, eleven (11) are classified as Least Concern and three (3) as Non-threatened, in accordance with DAO 2017-11 and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. They are among nature’s most powerful systems. Wetlands store water during droughts, absorb floods, and filter pollution, helping provide clean drinking water and support crops and livelihoods. #savewetlands #MilagrosTODAY Click here: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1GMTr3jmQm/
